Description:

The UPO2000E Series offers unprecedented value in customer applications with its innovative technology, industry leading specifications, powerful trigger functions and broad analysis capabilities. The Series is available in 70MHz and 100MHz bandwidth and 2 or 4 analog channels. It adopts UNI-T UPO visualization technology, has a maximum sample rate of 1GSa/s and a standard memory depth of 56Mpts.

The UNI-T UPO2104E is a 4-channel oscilloscope for high performance and is a direct successor to the UPO2104CS. Compared to its predecessor, a number of specifications have been changed, for example the 2104E has a memory depth of 56 Mpts and the waveform capture rate has been increased to 80,000 wfms/s. What makes this scope really unique is that it can use a separate time base per channel. Furthermore, the scope has a large number of functions and the trigger options have been drastically expanded.

The UPO-2104E also comes with a USB interface for storing signals and measurement results. It’s large 8″ LCD screen and low noise floor displays all signals in highly detailed view. The oscilloscope also has a 256-level intensity grading display, which is a nice feature for oscilloscopes in this price range. By means of this technique, multiple signals are placed on top of each other to show the most common signals with more intensity. In addition, the oscilloscope also offers color temperature indication to show more clearly how often values occur in a signal.

With 12-bit oscilloscopes all the rage these days, my main criteria was a 4-channel 12-bit scope with a nice big 10" touchscreen display for easy visibility. I'm a amateur hobbyist, so something around the 100 MHz bandwidth mark is enough, but with decent sampling rate (> 2 GSa/s).

The UNI-T UPO2000HD Series series checked all the boxes for me:

- 12-bit ADC vertical resolution

- 10.1" touchscreen (1280x800)

- 2 or 4 channels (mine is 4 channels)

- 70-200 MHz bandwidth (mine is 100MHz)

- Max Waveform Sampling Rate: 2.5 GSa/s (1 channel) / 1.25 GSa/s (2 channels) / 0.625 GSa/s (4 channels)

- Max Memory Depth: 100M pts

- Max Capture Rate: 125,000 frames (hardware real-time) / 250,000 wfm/s (vector mode) / 1,000,000 wfm/s (sequence mode)

- 3-year warranty (standard) / 5-year warranty (registered)

The only things missing are any kind of built-in function generator output (except the 10 MHz ref on the back), and no Digital Channels input.

The next step up is UNI-T MSO3024HD, $2,600.

Almost same specs, except base 200 MHz bandwidth, 2.5 / 2.5 / 1.5 GSa/s Samping Rate, 16 Digital Input channels standard.

I considered several other 12-bit oscilloscope's in the $1000-$2000 range. But the UNI-T unit had the best price/performance value:

1. Rigol DHO1000 Series, specifically the DHO1104 for $934:

- 70-200 MHz bandwidth

There isn't too many reviews of the UNI-T UPO2000HD Series on the internet (since it just came out). This is a "preview" as I'm just an amateur and don't have test gear to properly do a technical review.

Overview

The UNI-T UPO2204HD is a 200 MHz 4-channel 12-bit high-resolution oscilloscope built around the R12™ native 12-bit ADC. It samples at 2.5 GSa/s with 100 Mpts memory depth standard, and Ultra Phosphor 3.0 acquisition pushes the waveform capture rate to 1,000,000 wfms/s in sequence mode — sixteen times the vertical detail of an 8-bit scope, held at full bandwidth without ERES averaging or sample-rate trade-offs. The 10.1-inch capacitive multi-touch display, on-instrument 4 Mpts FFT, 9 standard protocol decoders, and built-in WebServer round out a six-instrument bench in a single chassis.

The four-channel UPO2204HD is the flagship of the UPO2000HD family — 200 MHz bandwidth, four simultaneous analog channels, 70 µVrms background noise, and 12-bit resolution at the full bandwidth without ERES or sample-rate compromise. For multi-rail switching-converter validation where high-side gate drive, low-side gate drive, switching node, and output ripple all need to be observed in one acquisition, this is the configuration.

R12™ — Native 12-Bit ADC at Full Bandwidth

R12™ is UNI-T's native 12-bit ADC architecture, holding 4,096 quantization levels at the full 200 MHz bandwidth and 2.5 GSa/s sample rate without ERES averaging or sample-rate trade-off. Background noise is 70 µVrms at full bandwidth — low enough that the 12-bit resolution actually shows up on the screen instead of being buried in the noise floor. For power-electronics validation where µV-scale ripple rides on a 400V bias rail, that headroom is the measurement.

Ultra Phosphor 3.0 — 1,000,000 wfms/s Acquisition

Ultra Phosphor 3.0 is UNI-T's third-generation acquisition engine. Eight-channel parallel graphics processing at up to 20 Gbps drives a continuous capture rate of 250,000 wfms/s, with sequence mode pushing the rate to 1,000,000 wfms/s for trigger-conditioned events. 256-level grayscale persistence makes intermittent runts, glitches, and jitter visible as density gradients on screen rather than as occasional flashes that the eye misses. The same engine drives the digital trigger system — high sensitivity, low jitter, and zone trigger for isolating non-repeating signals.

The UPO2204HD integrates six instrument functions into a single chassis: high-resolution oscilloscope, FFT spectrum analyzer with 4 Mpts and waterfall display, 4-digit digital voltmeter with DC/AC RMS modes, 7-digit hardware frequency meter, 9-protocol decoder and trigger engine, and the optional 12-parameter power analysis suite. With four analog channels feeding all of them, multi-rail converter validation and multi-bus protocol correlation happen on the same instrument without the cabling and context-switching of separate boxes.

Deep Memory — 100 Mpts Standard

100 Mpts of memory comes standard, not as an upgrade. At 2.5 GSa/s that captures 40 ms of full-rate signal in a single acquisition — long enough to record a complete soft-start sequence, a fault-recovery transient, or a multi-frame burst without re-arming. Combined with hardware-accelerated mask testing, the 4-bit ERES enhanced-resolution mode, and uninterrupted recording of up to 125,000 frames, the deep memory turns long-running events from a sampling problem into a navigation problem.

All Protocols Included Standard

Nine serial-bus protocol decoders are included with every UPO2204HD: RS-232/UART, I²C, SPI, CAN, CAN-FD, LIN, FlexRay, SENT, and Audio. Each protocol supports both triggering and decoding, with event-list and search functions for navigating long captures. Decoded data appears alongside the analog waveform on the same trace — correlate a misbehaving I²C transaction with the supply-rail glitch that caused it, or align CAN-FD frames with the gate-drive event that triggered the fault recovery. No license fees, no time-boxed unlocks — the protocols are standard.

Power Analysis — Optional 12-Parameter Suite

The optional power-analysis package adds 12 measurement and analysis functions to the UPO2204HD: power quality, harmonic analysis, current harmonics, RDS(on), switching loss, slew rate, safe operating area, modulation analysis, output ripple, startup/shutdown time, transient response, and power efficiency. Connect a voltage probe and a current probe, select the analysis type, and the UPO2204HD renders the results without external post-processing — the metrics that drive switching-converter design decisions, on the bench, alongside the time-domain trace.

Built-In Spectrum Analyzer — FFT to 4 Mpts

Standard enhanced FFT analysis runs at up to 4 Mpts across all channels with a frequency range from 0 to 1.25 GHz, four traces, four detection modes, and a waterfall display for tracking spectrum changes over time. Auto, manual, and threshold marker modes locate harmonics, spurs, and EMI sources without switching to a separate spectrum analyzer. For pre-compliance spot checks during board bring-up and switching-noise investigation during converter design, the on-instrument FFT closes a common bench-workflow gap.

56 Automated Measurements with Statistics

56 parameter measurements run continuously on every channel, with up to 27 measurements visible on screen and 39 single-channel parameters in the snapshot view. Statistics, histograms, and trend charts visualize each parameter's distribution over time. The new amplitude calculation strategy with top/bottom and burst-parameter handling makes the numbers correct on signals where naive measurement engines pick the wrong reference levels. No post-processing, no spreadsheet export — the answer is on the screen.

10.1-Inch Touch UI and Full Connectivity

The 10.1-inch 1280×800 capacitive multi-touch display supports pinch, drag, zoom, rectangle-draw, and edit gestures alongside the traditional knobs and one-touch front-panel keys. Mouse and keyboard are supported in parallel. The peripheral set includes USB Host, USB Device, LAN, EXT Trig, AUX Out (Trig Out / Pass-Fail), and HDMI for projector or external-monitor display. SCPI is standard, the built-in WebServer enables browser-based remote control from a PC or mobile device, and firmware updates are free over the product's lifetime. For automated power-converter qualification benches, the SCPI command set drives waveform capture, mask-test pass/fail, and long-record export from a Python or LabVIEW test harness.
